How this calculator works
This calculator compares your salary with and without the bonus through WageOra's shared tax engine, rather than applying a flat "bonus tax rate". This correctly captures effects like Personal Allowance taper when a bonus pushes your income over relevant thresholds.
How a bonus is actually taxed
There's no separate "bonus tax rate". See our guide on how a bonus is taxed in the UK to find out why, and how a large bonus can affect your tax band for that period.
Why your payslip may differ
Bonuses are often paid through a specific payslip and may be taxed differently in-period depending on your tax code and payroll software. This is an annual estimate, not an exact payroll bonus deduction. See why your payslip can differ from a salary calculator for why a bonus-month payslip can look different.
Worked example
A base salary of £35,000.00 plus a £3,000.00 gross bonus, in England, Wales or Northern Ireland with no pension or student loan, gives an estimated:
- Estimated additional deductions
- £840.00
- Estimated amount retained
- £2,160.00
