How this calculator works

Gross overtime pay is your hourly rate × overtime hours × multiplier. The take-home effect is calculated by comparing your salary with and without the overtime through WageOra's shared tax engine, not a flat "overtime tax rate". This correctly reflects effects like Personal Allowance taper where relevant.

How overtime is actually taxed

There's no separate "overtime tax rate". See our guide on how overtime is taxed in the UK to find out why, and how it can still change what's deducted from a specific payslip.

Overtime and pensions

This calculator assumes overtime pay is not pensionable, since workplace schemes vary. Your pension contribution (if set) applies to your existing salary only.

Why your payslip may differ

This is an annual estimate. Actual payroll-period treatment of overtime, tax codes and payroll timing can produce a different result on your payslip. See why your payslip can differ from a salary calculator for why an overtime payslip can look different.

Worked example

10 hours of overtime at 1.5× a £15.00-an-hour rate (an extra £225.00 gross), on a £30,000.00 base salary in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, gives an estimated:

Gross overtime pay
£225.00
Estimated additional take-home
£162.00
